A caesarean section, also known as a C-section, is surgery to deliver a baby. The baby is taken out through the mother's abdomen with surgical incisions in the abdomen and uterus. A cesarean section may be needed for many reasons and may even be planned in advance, but is often an emergency procedure. Most C-sections are done when unexpected issues arise during delivery. These may include: Health problems with the mother
The positioning of the baby
Not enough room for the baby to deliver through the vagina
Signs of fetal distress
Lack of progress in labor
A multiple birth pregnancy
A caesarean section is needed in about one in four women and, in many cases, is safer than vaginal birth. Although recovery time is longer than with a vaginal birth, a caesarean section benefits the health of the mother as well as the baby.
